Canadian Discount Brokerage's
« on: March 17, 2009, 06:00:15 AM »
I've been doing a lot of searching for a decent broker, as well as searching the forum, so far i've been pointed in the direction of Questrade, and Tradefreedom. I was originally playing around with Thinkorswim, but it seems like it may be a little to overwhelming for me and not entirely suited for us Canadian's.  We definitely get the shaft when it comes to online brokers.  I did just recently stumble upon https://www.scotiaitrade.com/pages/home/main.shtml. I'm curious as to what you think?  And maybe what broker it is that you are currently using and your experience with them?

I recommend TDameritrade and Zecco to trade penny stocks, are the best, but, I think that due to Canadian legislation, Zecco don't accept Canadian clients, but, I think that TDameritrade has a Canadian site, search them.

This one is the first time I hear about, I can't tel you anything.

I'm from Southern Alberta and i have been using Questrade for a few months now and have had no problems with it. My trades have gone through pretty quick. For 500 shares or under it is $4.95 and the max you ever pay is $9.00. It takes a week or two to get setup because of all the paperwork and checks i imagine.
When you open one make sure you open a margin account if you want to be able to trade on the OTC and the Pink, the TFSA account will not allow you to do that.
If you have any other questions let me know.

Probably your best solution with quest or tradefreedom - I use TD Web broker, it's my favorite platform. However, it's expensive.. you need either 100K in the account or trade more than 30 times a quarter at $29.99 just to get it to $9.99 trades. RBC also has pretty good stuff, comes with free level 2 in about the same price range.

thanks for the input, I'll have to dig deeper into questrade, looks promising.  I hope the platform works for a Mac, or else I'll be stuck using a web interface.

Does anyone have any experience with Interactive Brokers?  I'm definitely leaning towards Questrade.  I think TDWaterhouse may be out for me for the time being.
