Markets don't always fix economies. That's why monetary and fiscal policy are necessary. Without some government intervention, money supplies become irrelevant, liquidity would be a much larger issue and the business cycle troughs would be much deeper - along with sporadic inflation and unemployment. Without some form of insurance (that the government provides), when a company fails, such as Bear Stearns or LTCM, confidence is lost in the economic system. This applies even more so to Global South countries that need insurance in the form of the IMF or Worldbank to ensure a smaller risk premium for FDI.
